Praise for Bill Ackman’s Circumspection of Trump’s Tariffs
But Where are the other Voices of Reason?
I really applaud Bill Ackman’s straightforward and smart statement tweeted out on April 6, 2025, where he calls out Trump’s misguided tariff plan, warning it could spark an "economic nuclear war" that might wreck global trade and scare off investors. I share his sentiments and respect how he’s not afraid to speak up against a policy that could lead to an "economic nuclear winter" of our own making. Since then, a few other notable voices have echoed his stance—Elon Musk has pushed for a "zero-tariff" zone between the U.S. and Europe, subtly jabbing at the policy with a Milton Friedman video on free trade; Jamie Dimon warned on April 7 that the tariffs could hike inflation and tip the world into recession; Stanley Druckenmiller called them excessive, capping his support at 10%; and Ken Langone slammed them as a threat to paralyze international trade. But what really bothers me is how quiet most others remain—thousands of business leaders, economists, and policymakers should be joining this chorus, yet they’re not. Clearly, they’re just too scared to go against Trump, worried about his reaction or the political fallout, and that fear is stopping the honest conversation we need to avoid a huge economic mess.
